    Oh man that was bad.....

Hi all. My name is Siobhan Page so people call me spage. I do not normally write in forums but like someone else said if I write it down then hopefully it will keep me at it. I have titled this Oh man that was bad because it truly was. W1D1 was two days ago and I swore most of the way round. Everything hurt and I was panting so hard I thought I wasn't going to make it home. I feel ridiculous as 5 years ago I did not have a car and went everywhere on my bike. Up til a year ago I was ice skating two or three times a week, and not just a pootle but proper figure skating with jumps and spins. I then damaged the ligaments in my right knee and had to stop for a while. Well I just haven't been back. I recently changed jobs and became a desk bum working in a call center. All this has resulted in one very unfit person. Like they say 'If you don't use it, you loose it.' Well I lost it. I am going to get it back and I will get back on the ice. Like Mike says FIGHT! Today I did W1D2 and it was not so bad. I just have to get to the end of the programme, well the challenges lie ahead. WE CAN DO THIS!

    Week 3 day 2

I've been going strong so far. A little sore at times, but nothing major. I'm averaging a little over 2.5 miles in the 30 minutes. Seems like a lot right? but I know it's accurate. I've got a garmin fenix I run with and google maps agrees with the distance. But I've been really enjoying the run, and am looking at doing my first 5k on March 14. Will keep you all posted!

  7. Hello there, this morning I completed the scary week 5 day 3 and... I've nailed it ! I wasn't sure I could do it but once I started running I knew I could just go all the way to the end of 20 mins . This program really works, you just need to commit and enjoy. Just 6 months ago I was completing chemotherapy following a mastectomy for breast cancer. I was so weak that I couldn't lift my legs to climb stairs. One month after chemo I started to walk, first just at the end of the driveway and back , but little by little I started to regain energy and lose some weight. I weighted 95kg at the end of treatment , I was so bloated on steroids I could not recognised myself, but now, after months of clean healthy eating and exercising I am 84kg and committed to lose another 15kg. So this morning I ran 20 minutes non stop. Words cannot express how happy and grateful I am to be alive and healthy. If an overweight, 42yrs old mum of two, cancer survivor , ex (20 years) smoker can do it , you can do it too. Super excited now to see how the rest of the training will go. Have a great weekend everybody

    New to running

Hello everyone! I am new to running and haven't actively worked out in some time now! I had recently lost sixty pounds when I conceived my second child. She is now two months old and my boyfriend and I are getting married in a few months so its definitely time to get into shape! I have lost fifteen pounds since my baby was born but I gained seventy while pregnant so I need a lot of work! Any advice would be much appreciated!! Thank you!

  10. Patience. Don't ever look at the app or the time while you're running. Just wait until you hear the voice prompt. And don't skip ahead. Your body needs to move forward slowly. Welcome to the party!!!

  11. Thanks, y'all! The dr suggested hamstring stretches, and I'll do the squats too. I'm supposed to walk til the pain is gone, then go back to the program. So I'll be going really slowly, but it's better than nothing!

  13. If it were me, I would repeat the day you couldn't complete until you can!! So if it's week 3 day 3 you're stuck on, do it again, and again, AND AGAIN, until you kick it's butt. Then smile, pat yourself on the back for a victory, and move on. I'm going to throw out a suggestion but I don't know if it applies..... Do you watch the clock? Do you know how much longer you need to run before that next walk session? Well don't do it next time. Your brain is messing with you. It's lazy. It knows it only has another minute to run and it's going to try and sabotage you. FOOL IT. Don't look at the time. Just relax, take an easy pace and run. Your brain wont know what to do so it will just run eagerly awaiting the ladies voice. Let us know how it goes!!

  14. teehee Timb ... I'm butchering her song; however in regards to price ... I'm all 'bout that price, 'bout that price, no trouble! I'm all 'bout that price, 'bout that price, no trouble!

  15. These are just guesses. I'm not a doctor and have never fractured anything other than my pride.... Do you have running shoes? Did you get fit at a running store to be sure the shoe type matches your natural gait? Do you wear cushioned running socks? (Belega Hidden Comfort are like running in a cloud ) Do you have inserts for your running shoes? Sure made it more comfortable for me Do you do calf stretches? This is from my physical therapist. He tells me it's ultra critical to have good ankle rotation to minimize stress on the body. (absolutely ask a doctor before doing this as it's in the area you were injured. I am not a medical professional. Just a parrot.)

    question

The simple answer, NO! The Why... Run training is strength training. You are trying to build your leg muscles to enable you to achieve more. When you run, you tear muscle tissue. This is why you are sometimes sore the next day. You have intentionally inured yourself. Over the 48 hour period after you run, your muscles repair themselves. When they repair themselves, they rebuild stronger than their previous form. This means, you don't build muscle when you run. You build muscle when you rest. When you run the second day in a row you tear muscle fiber that hasn't repaired yet thus negating some of the benefit you would have gained by letting those muscles rest. Off days are for walking, biking, elliptical, arc trainer, swimming, yoga, and any other low impact type thing you can come up with. This is not forever. If you were a marathon runner, it wouldn't really hurt you to run 5 miles on your off day as 5 miles is barely light intensity for you. It's probably akin to you and I walking on our off day but for now, let those muscles rest. They will come back with a vengeance as their way of saying thanks for the day off ( who doesn't love a day off?)

    question

Ricky, DEFINITELY TAKE THE REST DAYS!!!!! Let me tell you from experience, it is not worth the pain and frustration! I built up to running a couple of 5Ks and recently completed a 10K. I was at the point where I ran a few training runs at 6 miles. I thought I could do anything. Well, just before the 10K, I decided to get three good workouts (6 miles, 3 miles, and 4 miles) in on consecutive days. Just before the end of the third day, I felt a pain in my knee. It's been three weeks and I've tried to run once, to no avail. Overuse injuries happen too often. You can certainly exercise nearly every day, but make sure you are cross training, (lifting, yoga, walking, cycling) on those others days. Give your body a chance to stay healthy.

  22. Elle, I am not an expert on shoes (by any means). I'm still working with my first pair of "real" running shoes, and I still bought those because the price was more in the range I was looking for. Don't tell some of my running friends who aren't on this forum, or they'll kill me for allowing price to be a concern! I would try a few things that might help with the pain. Try wrapping one day for your run and see if that helps. The biggest thing I would suggest, if you are often getting swelling later in the day is to ice right after you complete your run, and again later in the day, if necessary. Best of luck!

  23. Donna, sorry to hear about that. What is the recovery time on that? Is there rehab, or just rest. My thoughts are with you. Be strong, you'll be able to get back out there!

  29. I also agree. Put it away and forget it. Think about other things. Like the outdoors around you. Gardens, lights, anything. I like to make my mental notes of things I need to pick up at the grocery store, chores or think of a movie or book I may have just watched/ read. Lol, anything to get my mind off of how much time is left!!
