Halfway there and Haven't Quit Yet!

Recommended Posts

Good job, Ruthie. I hope you continue on to the 10K app; it's way more fun than the 5K app.

Rob

Why is it way more fun? I haven't downloaded it yet... I kind of feel that right now, 30 or 35 minutes  is enough for me (not sure if I can do more)

And also, don't you need to invest more time in it? How long are the sessions?

As I feared, it was raining....me and my running buddy met by the school bus in our running gear and umbrellas and went our separate ways...it did stop raining after a couple of hours so I went out ru

As I always tell my son - he is the boss of his brain and not the other way around :-). Looks like I am going to have to walk the walk.

@blondebass - Good for you and keep us posted. I dialed it down from 4 times a week to three times, but I have to say that two consecutive days not running is not working for me either. I think what

The nice thing about running with an app is the accountability, checking off runs etc. Like a written 2do list as opposed to a mental 2do list - nothing like checking completed tasks of a list...

If I see I am flaking out, or perhaps not having as much fun or falling out of the habit, then I might just do the 10k app...

I preplan my runs each week for that purpose. I know what I'm going to run and make sure I stick to the plan within reason.

@ Anne - I didn't mean that running was a chore, only that the planning might become a chore. As a women with a family I am constantly planning, coordinating, etc. etc... it was really convenient just having to show up and participate, which is what running with the app is like.

Anyway, today was my first independent, post app run, and it was a disaster.

I had previously planned to skip the warmup walk and do a dynamic walkup instead, thus making it easier to start my tracking app (whichever I decide on) when I leave and start running right away.

Found a dynamic warm up in runners world, but what they failed to mention is that one should warm up for the warmup... I think I over stretched   (don't know how to explain it - cramped or over stretched) my thighs and inner thighs and upper arm and right shoulder. I even considered not running, but decided to brave it all the same. I have to climb a flight of stairs from my house to road level, which I could barely do - my muscles cramped or something midway... I got to the top, and decided that I might be able to run it out, so I pressed go on endomondo and on map my run and went for it. I could only run for about 17 of the 30 minutes I had intended to run. My legs would just not push the pavement back.

Good thing is that when I came back, I did some post run yoga, from an app I downloaded (daily yoga) and that was good.

I think I will go back to walking warmup and not do dynamic warmups until I am back in the Yoga swing and stronger.

You may fair better with the dynamic warm-up than I did, since you have been doing other workouts, strength training and such. All I've been doing is running, and it seems as if the fumes have gone to my head, based on this morning... I now have to hobble over to the kettle to make me some coffee, and then hobble back over to my desk...  :o

I think that I have been tricked (or have tricked myself) into thinking that the fact that I can run for thirty minutes makes me invincible, and that all the damage done by 10 years of sedentary living has just faded away on the way to 5k. It hasn't, and running for 30 minutes is wonderful, but my body is nowhere near capable of what it used to be capable of, and I will have to work on it... for now, I will settle for warming up by walking and doing post running Yoga when I come back, which will both stretch and strengthen me. I will also do some sort of Yoga on my non run days - and gently ease my way back to the days I had easy access to my toes (without bending my knees...)

Well, didn't run yesterday or today. Found it harder yesterday to get from standing to sitting, It was just about impossible, today was a little easier. As usual, my left leg is not fairing as well as my right. Serious lack of symmetry. I did a bit of yoga tomorrow, and although I am still hobbling, I will see if I can go out for my run tomorrow. I will try to go for 30 minutes, but will forgive myself if I can't. It's hard to know if I will do more damage or if its OK to push through this now since there is some improvement....

A bunch of posts by Azotol seemed to have disappeared from here. Its just me talking to myself for about five posts...I know they were on here...

Anyway, went for a run today, must have set my time goal wrong on endomondo - 30 hours instead of 30 minutes.... was surprised it wasn't letting me know that I had finished. Checked to see and I had run 34 and a half minutes and 4.78km. I could have run a bit more but I was struggling so I didn't. Didn't want to push my self and had already done four more minutes than I planned.

Way to go Ruthie!!! It was really nice here yesterday (in the low 60's) so I was able to thankfully abandon the treadmill and do w8d2 outside. Around our block is exactly 3.3 miles, so I decided to run the whole thing, and I actually did it! I struggled though. 2.5 miles seems to be my wall. I'm going to keep working at it though. Lung capacity is a big problem I think. 20 years of smoking will do that to a person :-/

Thanks rob!

Wendell when did u quit? I havent had a smoke in maybe 13 years after probably 20 or tewnty plus years of smoking and i dont feel the difficulty in breathing... its more in my legs...you probably need to give your lungs a fair amount of time to overcome the damage...i definitly need to strengthen my legs...

I quit last October 30th, so about 14 months ago. I'm always looking for excuses...anything other than, hey! You're 44 and out of shape lol!!

Sorry to say, its probably a combinations... I am 48 and out of shape... but more so in my legs than in my lungs it seems. Also, you did a 5k in 33 minutes... I would say that's pretty d-m good

Yay! and we're back!

So today I ran my first 5k (not race, just the distance). My running buddy is back running with me after being sick for about 10 days, so it was nowhere near anything you could possible call fast... but we are going to run 5 k  a few times now until we can cut the speed a bit... then we might incorporate speed intervals or something else to make it more interesting.

We have changed our route from doing laps around the same street to splitting the laps between our street and the one below with the steep hill, just to add some interest.

  • 2 months later...

Long time since my last post... still running, though. I came on here to check when I completed 5k for the first time....it seems like I have been running for a really long time, but in reality, it's only about 10 weeks since I first did 5ks. Anyway, yesterday I ran 10k (not a race, just the distance) for the first time. I am quite pleased with myself...Would never have believed I would ever make this distance...
