Healthylife4me
I am at w6d3. I have been for a while. I have been repeating day2 to keep up, but just can't seem to get day 3 in. I am having trouble with breathing when it is cold out. Especially when it is windy. I was going to attempt w6d3 again today, but woke up to 40 km/h winds and -3 temp. I don't want to say I'm a fair weather runner because I have done it. It's just very very difficult. Does anyone have any advice? How to do you run in the cold/ wind? Azatol
I haven't yet run below 35 degrees F thus don't have any problems but I'm quite cold sensitive and as a walker ( for a long time ), I can tell you a balaclava is your friend. They have some pretty affordable merino wool ones on amazon. Will keep you warm and dry ( no cotton ). That would be my suggesation as the voice of inexperience. Caz
I use a powerbreathe to warm my lungs up when I'm running below 0° I don't know whether it's psychological or not but I find it a bit easier when I first start running. As for the wind I live in a windy place and I find the woods a good place to run when it's bad. You can't go flat out but it's more interesting and works your muscles in a different way. :-) Healthylife4me
Casagarber@yahoo.com
Wow! -3! You rock! I ran this morning and it was 43 and my ears and fingers were freezing (to me ) Healthylife4me
Healthylife4me
Lol thanks! I try to keep motivated. Unfortunately, I didn't run today. I'm hoping tomorrow is not as windy and I'll head out. We are expecting some snow tomorrow. Azatol

Healthylife4me
Thanks. I actually did suck it up and go out. I ran through some subdivisions so the wind wasn't so bad. I did it!! W6d3!! Whoo hoo! On to week 7! Feeling a bit intimidated, but I know I can do it. Slow and steady. I'm the only one in the race, so I always win. TheRoseWithin~Shannon
Dang! Congratulations HLRme! I'm curious, by the end or middle of the run do you start to notice a difference in how the cold is affecting you? I ask because I have never run outside during the winter - only inside. I stepped outside my comfort zone, yesterday, in below 35 and didn't think I'd want to do it again, yet I warmed up towards the end and felt great! What are you noticing for you, and what are you saying to yourself, in those first minutes of bitter cold, to press on? Healthylife4me
Hi! First, I have to say, I ran slow. I wanted to make sure I didn't quit running. I did notice a difference between 5 and 10 minutes. My body warmed up. I also ran down streets with houses on both sides, so the cold bitter wind was not an issue. I have been reading a lot of posts and there is great advice on breathing (KellyAnn TheRoseWithin~Shannon and Azatol
KellyAnn
Oh my Gosh, Helathylife4me, Absolutely incredible. I'm so excited for you. Feels great to be able to accomplish that huh??? You did amazing. I am on Week 7, Day 1 on Monday. I've taken a bepreak the last few weeks with lots of travel so I might revert back to week 5 or 6. I sooo love these apps. Amazing and exciting. Keep going. Proud if you. Yay. Healthylife4me and TheRoseWithin~Shannon
AmyDz
Hi. New to running again after 20 years, life, kids, major knee injuries, etc. What do you wear to run in when it's cold out?
Healthylife4me
I am also a beginner. Before this app I never, ever thought I could be a runner! I never buy anything until I am sure it is something I will continue to do. So... I just wear what I have. Sweatpants. If it's super cold, I wear leggings under them. I wear my old winter coat (so I dont sweat up my regular one) and again if it's reall cold, I wear a hoody under it. I'm not going to lie, sometimes I am uncomfortably sweaty, and it's hard to run with a winter coat in your hands. That being said, just try out what you do have. And wear a hat!! I also have slip on grippers for my shoes if it's slippery or snowy out. good luck!! You will find what works for you!! Azatol
Once I decided I love running, i invested a few bucks in some quality gear. Also did it during pre and post xmas sales so many things were half off. I wear russel athletic wicking baselayer from Walmart with a long sleeve running shirt and a Brooks LSD wind shell that's ridiculously thin. On the bottom I just have a pair of loose fit running pants. Synthetic running gloves and a beanie and I'm good to go down into the lower 30's . Coler than that I'll add in a baselayer bottom and some merino wool glove liners and should be good down into the 20s. Below that, I'll most likely wimp out and pay for a month membership at the YMCA with an indoor track, LOL Casagarber@yahoo.com
Healthylife4me
I'll definitely look into some running gear soon. Today it was 0 or 32. Not bad for running.
KellyAnn
Wow Everyone. So proud of all of you for running in the cold. Thanks Azatol for you advice. I am going to run in the snow tomorrow. Yay. Brrrr. You all are doing great. Keep it up.
Caz
How do you stop your eyelashes freezing?
Azatol
I leave them in my gym bag. I hate wearing them when I exercise. Glasses + sweat = lame. Additionally, they interfere with my wrap over the ear headphones. If this isn't an option I'd suggest you check out a motorcycle shop. They sell anti fog stuff for riding glasses and helmet face shields that I beleive also helps prevent freezing.

Healthylife4me
Lol. I've never had my eyelashes freeze. Of course I've never run in -7 temp. Before. I'll let you know how it goes.
Caz
It's not really a problem, I find it quite funny. It's the water vapour from your breath, sticks to your hair and freezes but you can see it on your eyelashes. :-P
TheRoseWithin~Shannon
Speaking of frozen ... I said to my 15 year old son on Monday, "Hey honey, my nose is numb. If you happen see a frozen icicle hangin' from the inside of me nose ... feel free to take a whack at it! I won't mind at all!" He rolled his eyes. *snickers* Frozen eyelashes feel so funny! So excited to run tomorrow ... it snowed last night! Azatol and KellyAnn
