Breathing in the wind/ cold

Hi! First, I have to say, I ran slow. I wanted to make sure I didn't quit running. I did notice a difference between 5 and 10 minutes. My body warmed up. I also ran down streets with houses on both sides, so the cold bitter wind was not an issue. I have been reading a lot of posts and there is great advice on breathing (KellyAnn2 points -

Ok this is my own running tip from my own personal limited experience and novice physical fitness knowledge. If you lend any credability to me, you're gambling. <G> I found at the start that I was struggling. I'd look at my fitbit ( its a watch too ) and check the time constantly. OMG OMG OMG just 2 more minutes and I can walk again. My body knew it was about to get a rest and it fought me hard to convince me it was out of gas. It's not!! Your body will sabotage you every single time it can. You're brain is lazy. You must fool it!!! Stop looking at the time. Run until you're told to walk. Your body doesn't know when it's going to rest and can't poop you out in advance. Just a nice comfortable pace and get lost in the music. It really really works for me. I think you should try it and tell me your fidnings. Keep your body guessing.1 point -

Hello everyone! My name is Terry, I am 47, and I just finished day one of the training! My goals are to get in better cardio shape, be able to hike again, and get a better report at my next checkup in June. Life is too short to miss the important things, so got to get moving!1 point -

25 minutes!! I did it! I never thought I could be a runner!! My sister has been a big part of my motivation! She is on week 9. She has asked me to run a 5k with her in April! I said I would. Yikes!! Thank you c25k!!1 point -
Self judgement and doubt during your run are good signs. Think about when you're really really pooped and your tank is empty. Do you form thoughts or just vegitate wishing it would end? If your mind is able to wander and drum up your inner fears, then that tells me you're body is not at its limit. I call this a win!! Your adapting to the training. As your body changes and adapts further, your confidence will grow. You'll no longer get those negative feelings. You'll be too sidetracked thinking about what you'll conquer next. Keep fighting!! I can see the passion in what you type.1 point

Hi. I asked my husband to video me running. So I could see what it is I am doing to make my hip hurt. I went to our local high school and ran the track. I turn my leg out. The longer I run, the more it turned out until I was eventually limping. That was 3 runs ago. I have since focused on keeping my leg in proper position and running slower. I still have some pain, but it is so much better than it was.1 point -
I was wondering if there was a place I could do this on here! What a fab idea!1 point

Breathing in the wind/ cold
TheRoseWithin~Shannon reacted to Healthylife4me for a topic
I am also a beginner. Before this app I never, ever thought I could be a runner! I never buy anything until I am sure it is something I will continue to do. So... I just wear what I have. Sweatpants. If it's super cold, I wear leggings under them. I wear my old winter coat (so I dont sweat up my regular one) and again if it's reall cold, I wear a hoody under it. I'm not going to lie, sometimes I am uncomfortably sweaty, and it's hard to run with a winter coat in your hands. That being said, just try out what you do have. And wear a hat!! I also have slip on grippers for my shoes if it's slippery or snowy out. good luck!! You will find what works for you!!1 point -

Good Morning Azatol! No I didn't buy ... yet. I was simply curious what you were using it for. Glad you shared another link to peek at ...thank you! That said, I was thinking it would work great on my youngest who on occasion gets headaches - often he asks me to massage his upper neck and shoulders after school. And yes, extreme lactic acid build up sucks sucks sucks! LOL In the past I learned to trust and listen to my body and/or pace myself to prevent extreme build up - sore muscles are fine, but lactic acid in my calves/legs from over exerting is not fine - OUCH! Over the next few workouts, I'll gradually figure out where I am at and then push myself beyond. When or if I am visited by the extreme lactic acidosis demon *cries* .... I'll push past the pain the next day, slow down if needed until my legs get used to the workout, and they will. "Oh wow! I do have a muscle there! It's alive!!" As far as normal-sore-worked-out-muscles... I absolutely love sore muscles ... love it! A sure sign that I had a good work out. My body is literally reshaping itself from the inside out. It can be quite painful warming up the next day yet as I keep walking/running the soreness works itself out. Saint Patty's day run ...... here I come!!!1 point -
Hi Missy! When i first started lifting I couldn't do lunges. My knees hurt like crazy. I did negative split squats for a month to build up my legs and then once I got some muscle, it took some pressure off the actual knee. Now I lunge and run pain free. I would consider giving it a try. First check out this vid... Now. That's gonna hurt like gangbusters so don't do it that way. Do it without the dumbbells and next to a chair. Put your hand on the chair and support yourself. Also, lower yourself down very slowly. an easy 4 count. Then spring back up and repeat. I'd do 8 reps each leg for 3 sets with a 90 second rest between each set. Do that 2-3 times a week and within a month I suspect your knee problems will suffice. I am not a medical professional so I don't know that your problem isn't truly musculoskeletal vs lack of leg strength. This is just what I did. Please take that advice at your own risk. I'm just a guy who was in cruddy shape and worked through it.1 point

Breathing in the wind/ cold
Healthylife4me reacted to TheRoseWithin~Shannon for a topic
Dang! Congratulations HLRme! I'm curious, by the end or middle of the run do you start to notice a difference in how the cold is affecting you? I ask because I have never run outside during the winter - only inside. I stepped outside my comfort zone, yesterday, in below 35 and didn't think I'd want to do it again, yet I warmed up towards the end and felt great! What are you noticing for you, and what are you saying to yourself, in those first minutes of bitter cold, to press on?1 point -

I use a powerbreathe to warm my lungs up when I'm running below 0° I don't know whether it's psychological or not but I find it a bit easier when I first start running. As for the wind I live in a windy place and I find the woods a good place to run when it's bad. You can't go flat out but it's more interesting and works your muscles in a different way. :-)1 point -

I haven't yet run below 35 degrees F thus don't have any problems but I'm quite cold sensitive and as a walker ( for a long time ), I can tell you a balaclava is your friend. They have some pretty affordable merino wool ones on amazon. Will keep you warm and dry ( no cotton ). That would be my suggesation as the voice of inexperience.1 point -
