RunningDork26.2
I currently run in Brooks Adrenalines. I overpronate, so my feet appreciate the support. I always recommend that people find a dedicated running store that does gait analysis when buying running shoes. They will analyze your run and recommend a variety of shoes of different makes and price ranges that best suit YOUR running style. I go to a local store here in OKC called Red Coyote Running and Fitness. It's also a good place to go meet other like-minded runners. Many of those local running stores also host a variety of running clubs, which usually welcome runners of all ability levels! Remember, if you run you're a runner. kmarkerrn
Guest Shawn 5355
I just started the couch to 5k training. I think I do need better shoes. Does it make a difference if you run on the treadmill vs the sidewalk/cement? I notice my endurance is better in the treadmill.
zombiechic
I'm a beginning runner. Wasn't really sure what to try, so went to a local running store, Fleet Feet, where they recommended Brooks Adrenaline after watching me run. My first two pair I bought from the store but I've recently found an excellent deal on the Brooks website so bought the most recent pair from there. RPMiller
I run in Brooks Beasts. I've got a wide foot, and I'm running to lose weight so these shoes work perfectly for me. I've found the best deals at http://www.runningwarehouse.com/ although Amazon has been competitive a couple times, so I would check both before buying. purpul
aniseedvan
I just started the couch to 5k training. I think I do need better shoes. Does it make a difference if you run on the treadmill vs the sidewalk/cement? I notice my endurance is better in the treadmill. There's a lady at our local Sweatshop group who can run 5k on a treadmill but found it quite hard going initially on the runs outside. I think the variation in hills is harder to replicate on a treadmill. I also agree that you should get yourself analysed. I can't recommend my local independent store as they sadly closed down, but they were fantastic. Apparently I'm a neutral runner so hopefully my Asics and my style will reduce the impact of me pounding away on tarmac!
kmarkerrn
The best thing I did when I started C25K was to visit my local running store and have my gait analyzed. It made a huge difference in my endurance. Ran my first 5K on 7/4 and couldn't be more proud to be a runner! Lydia
tigger_ag
I'm also an overpronator and wear both Brooks Adrenaline but also the Ariel's on occassion. After suffering from a double stress fracture I will never doubt the importance of good shoes. I am also a firm believer in tracking the mileage of my shoes which has me getting new ones about every six months.
Guest Allison
I'm wondering too what the best shoe is for running for me as a bigger person
RPMiller
I'm wondering too what the best shoe is for running for me as a bigger person As a bigger person myself, I like the Brooks Beast. It has a wider size and great support. Check my link above for where I get mine, but also check Amazon before you pull the trigger because sometimes it is cheaper there. A New Start
I'm absolutely clueless - what should I search for? "Running store"? "Running shoes"? I bought my sneakers at a department store.
RPMiller
Use the link I posted above. There's a lot of resources there.

KellyAnn
Thanks everyone for the great ideas. Especially for the bigger person shoes too. That's awesome. Love the support we all have for each other. DaVakin, I cant what to try that shoe the next time I need a new pair. I've been such an Asics, Nike, New Balance for years. Excited for something new. A New Start;, def running shoes or cross trainers that are good for any workout. I do wear different shoes for exercise class and running. Guest Dee
I have barely started c25k and my shins already hurt. I was told it is probably my shoes but they aren't cheap and then I was told my gait is the problem because I strike on my heal. What do I do? See if you can find a good shoe store that specializes in running. They usually have the technology to evaluate your gait and recommend the best shoe for you (and it's free, or at least it should be). In my area that store is Roadrunner Sports (I'm in San Diego). Until I met my runner husband and started learning about running (I've never been a runner, more of a strength training and group X kinda person), I didn't realize there were shoes designed specifically for running. So when I finally bought a good pair of running shoes, I actually started to enjoy running more than when I ran with my trainers.
TenaciousT
I am a heavyweight and I recently invested in a pair of asics nimbus 15. They set me back a few coins but they make walking a completely different experience from my other shoes. I think the gel helps a lot to support my weight. I would definitely recommend them to try out.

Guest Restarting
Your shoes play a part in it, but you need to stretch your calves. Your calves are pulling too tight and therefore causing shin splints.

dgirard
I have also just started c25k and my shins were killing me today on w1d3. I had to stop once to stretch my shins because they were cramping. Does anyone know why?
sdbeachgirl
@dgirard: what kind of shoes do you wear when you run? It's most likely related to that. Also could be the surface on which you run. My husband always scolds me when I run on the sidewalk cuz it's harder on your joints, etc than the street/blacktop. Be careful - shin splints HURT
