A doctor recently told me...

Diet is for looks.

Running is for health.

Lifting weights is for strength.

Don't know if that helps you, but it made me see that all three are necessary.

"Diet is for looks" minimizes the importance of how what you eat affects you the most

Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food...Hippocrates

Too many studies found that this affects you more than anything

What you eat shapes your body and how it functions.

Running certainly helps with cardio and overall fitness. If you use  workout equipment at the gym then you are probably working out a specific muscle or muscle group. You will build up the strength in that specific muscle group rather than just working on your legs when running.

Running and the gym are both good workout options, but the one you choose should really just depend on your fitness goals.

Cardio is definitely a must, it helps build up your heart like Agraham said. You can see all of these super strong bodybuilders in the gym but their cardio is horrible, it makes me worry about their heart health. I try to do cardio at least 3 days a week just to help my heart strength. HIIT training really helps out! But I think a mix of eating right, resistance training, and cardio training will lead to a healthy life.
