Does it really get easier?

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is Katie and I'm new here. I am about 50 lbs overweight and have never been a runner, even as a kid, but I have always had dreams of running! So I started c25k yesterday. I made it through the first 60 seconds of running and it nearly collapsed me! I wasn't able to keep running, but I did the best I could with power walking.

My question is if my ability is so low, will it really get easier? I can't even imagine doing week 2!! I may be on week one for quite a while.

I'm going to keep trying!

It might just be semantics but, personally, I don't think it gets any easier. I just get better at it. After barely completing the first day, I couldn't imagine doing it again much less what the future weeks had in store. But, lo and behold, the next time I ran I was able to push just a little bit harder, go a little bit faster and run just a little bit longer. It's those incremental improvements that add up to the completion of the first week and then the completion of the program.

Stick with it.

I couldn't agree more.  I had a hard time the first day but I made it.  I saw the schedule for Week 2 and didn't know if I could do it.  Week 3 seemed an impossible jump.  Each time, I bulled through it and made it.  Week 4 finally got me when I just couldn't do the repeated 5 minute runs.  I kept hammering at it - slowing down at times, looking for flatter neighborhoods to run in and, eventually (last Sunday) I finished Week 4 even though it really took 2 weeks.  Yesterday was the first of Week 5 and, again, I couldn't quite finish the multiple 5 minute runs.  That wasn't a failure as there were still improvements from the previous run (I also track progress with MapMyRun+) and I'll be at it again on Saturday.

I agree, it can only get easier. I do admit though, I have always had a hard time with running. It seems to exhaust me a million times more than any other form of exercise...and i don't quite know why? I would love to run, but instead I have found a lot of other exercises I enjoy and can seem to handle better (ie. bike riding, work out classes, etc.).
