Oh man that was bad.....

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

My name is Siobhan Page so people call me spage. I do not normally write in forums but like someone else said if I write it down then hopefully it will keep me at it.

I have titled this Oh man that was bad because it truly was. W1D1 was two days ago and I swore most of the way round. Everything hurt and I was panting so hard I thought I wasn't going to make it home.

I feel ridiculous as 5 years ago I did not have a car and went everywhere on my bike. Up til a year ago I was ice skating two or three times a week, and not just a pootle but proper figure skating with jumps and spins. I then damaged the ligaments in my right knee and had to stop for a while. Well I just haven't been back.

I recently changed jobs and became a desk bum working in a call center.

All this has resulted in one very unfit person. Like they say 'If you don't use it, you loose it.' Well I lost it.

I am going to get it back and I will get back on the ice. Like Mike says FIGHT!

Today I did W1D2 and it was not so bad. I just have to get to the end of the programme, well the challenges lie ahead.

WE CAN DO THIS!

Welcome Welcome! Im so happy you decided to try and get healthy to get back to figure skating thats awesome! what a great goal! The first couple weeks are always rough. It sucks but I suppose the body is just making sure that youre in it to win it and it sounds like you are. Just keep at it and youll be surprised how quickly your body remembers what its like to be fit.

Keep us posted! we are here for help and encouragement if need be

Thank you. Yes your right the beginning is the hardest. A few years ago I started the programme and got to week 3 before my phone broke and I had a phone that didn't have the memory to hold apps. Well any excuse not to exercise. I will get to the end.

So W1D3 done. We have the highs and lows of running. I feel great that I have done it. I felt that I could have done 90 secs jogging and 60 secs walking and not the other way round as it was. I did what it told me to do.

On the lows I didn't feel like I was going much faster than walking. In fact I feel like I was a granny in a power walking class and the only thing that was missing was the dumbells in my hands. All I kept thinking was at least I am here giving it a go.

The other big low was my shins hurt and my ankles, my right one in particular. I couldn't decide if it was cramp or a strain, it was worse when I was jogging. It is the muscle on top that joins the ankle to the foot. I stuggled with it. It is fine now that I'm home, well I still know that I have hurt it but nothing to worry about it. I had a banana when I got in, to see if that helps.

I do stretch before I run. I walk for 3 mins then stretch. Maybe I am not stretching enough.

oh well I will solider on.

Congrats on finishing week one! thats a huge step!

I hear about ankle pain from a lot of new runners its not a fun thing and it keeps most of them from continuing. I wish I could tell you what it is but maybe our injury page could help with that, Theres a good post about shin splints too. I hope you keep up the great work because youre making important progress!

Good Luck

So I made it. W2D1 I got up this morning with every intention to go for a run. Did I.... no I sat at my computer instead. I run a part time business and did somethings that I had been putting off so it wasn't all bad.

After lunch I thought about my blog on here and how silly I would look if I didn't post my next day and look like I had given up. So i strapped on my shoes and stepped out the house. I did my 4 min walk warm up and then I paused I did more stretches than I did on my other runs. I did not have so much issue today which is fantastic and will stop me worrying about it.

I run the large park that is behind my house. On one of the fields they had built an outdoor gym. I said that will be useful as I won't have to pay to go 5 the gym. I have never used before and as I went past I paused my run and used it. I did 10 reps or 1min on each one. It wasn't much but some of the pieces were really hard. It has given me the confidence to use it again another day.

I continued my run. Well again it wasn't really running but moving a little bit faster. But the point is I did it.

I really don't feel that bad which means my fitness is improving. :-)

Hi Spage,

Well, look at you. I am Impressed. It sure does get you motivated doenst it?? Whn you don't feel like going, but you do anyways because you want to post. The app calls my name. Lol.

For me, I love to workout in the am, it's too cold out now, so I wait until around 11 and go before lunch. Then I can do my websites, blog, Moderate here, but I do it.

So W2D2 done. It was harder than the other day but I think that was cos I did it in the morning. Half way round I realised that I hadn't had breakfast which really wont have helped.

I went the long way round so that I could get to the gym at the end of my run. I had 1 repeat left which was ok and probably a good warm down after being on the machines.

Today I did 2 lots of 10 reps or 2 min. Some of the machines are boring but hey ho.

The last machine/ apparatus is one to do sit ups. After using it the other day my lower stomach has been hurting. That's understandable as I probably don't use those muscles much. Today trying to do the sit ups it hurt so bad. I could barely lie down and was so not using the right technique. I thought ahh I'm never gonna do the reps. Somehow after a shakey start I made it. The second set got easier. So hopefully next time it won't be so hard.

My problem now is feeling very lazy and so un motivated to do anything let alone move around. How do people have the energy?

haha honestly? coffee. Especially after a good work where you push yourself, like the one you just had (great job pushing yourself through your work out btw). Its awful but normally all I want to do is just lie down and veg after a workout so I have coffee so I can make it through the rest of the day with my toddler. Im sure there are healthier options but Im only human and coffee is the best.

Coffee is good for you, unless you are drinking gallons of the stuff. Unfortunately I don't like coffee and I'm trying to give up fizzy drinks so no coke or anything like that. I will just have to keep pushing through.

Thanks for the we encouragement. :-)

thats very true :) There are some teas who have a pretty good dose of caffeine, my mom lives off of them haha.  If you have time before having to do the rest of your day a quick cool shower could give you a jolt.

The shower isn't a bad idea. I don't like teas either. I'm a hot chocolate kind of girl but I'm trying not to have as much sugar. Not that it's working very well as I'm proper addicted and crave the stuff.

I'm sure it will get better as they say 'Fake it til you make it.'

Mea Mia I don't have any children at the moment so don't really understand but could hazard a guess as I'm like that whenever I see the nephews. I have just got myself a new water bottle that is 700 ml so I know that if I drink four of them a day I have had my 2lts or more. I am trying hard to achieve that. I have a flexi sports bottle that is 500 ml and am trying to drink that after my run. I cannot always manage it straight away but I get there in the end.

hmm ok no coffee or tea...besides like a five hour energy type thing, which ive never tried we may have to research a good way to get energy. I know bananas are supposed to give you an energy boost but in comparison to my coffee buzz I never really notice haha.

I love hot chocolate too! i have a cup of sugar free and 98% caffeine free before bed like every night
