  1. Outside is where you will run your first 5k so outside is the best place to run, then indoor track, treadmill and I guess if you can jogf in place why not. ANYTHING is better than sitting on your butt!!
  2. It was chilly, windy, dark, gloomy, damp, and I enjoyed every minute of it!! Week 6 Day 2 is in the books. No more walking breaks. I actually had a rather difficult time today. My calves were really upset and the last leg of my run was directly into a headwind. We made it. I'm ready to advance to the next level. Gonna run a few errands ( gotta meet my free range egg supplier ) and then it's off to the gym. Squat day!! FIGHT!!
  3. I leave them in my gym bag. I hate wearing them when I exercise. Glasses + sweat = lame. Additionally, they interfere with my wrap over the ear headphones. If this isn't an option I'd suggest you check out a motorcycle shop. They sell anti fog stuff for riding glasses and helmet face shields that I beleive also helps prevent freezing.
  4. Anyone got one yet? I've worn a Fitbit for over a year now. Was wearing a flex and now a charge but this new Surge has me drooling. Fitbity, watch, semi smartwatch and GPS watch all in one. MUST HAVE Anyone got one yet? Waiting to see how accuratre the GPS is and if the step counter matches the accurace of the others.
  5. Wow Missy, I'm impressed with you. Being able to post your bodily measurements, in a coed forum shows bravery and dedication. You may not realize it but your a woman who's (at least partly)comfortable in her own skin. I do the same on my fitness forums but it's a men only forum. I'm no longer self conscious about it though. Add in that your a mom, wife and pushing for an education. You're a woman chock full of dedication. I'm confident that we will watch those numbers shrink. The only numbers I expect to increase are the size of your smile, your endurance and your confidence. You have a recipe for success. I'll be watching this one!
  6. That's right. 2015 is not the year for IFs. It's not IF you will change your diet, it's WHEN It's not IF yoiu will run a 5k, it's WHEN It's not IF you will feel better about yourself it's WHEN IF you have the mental fortitude to forge ahead with this change, you will know it was the right decision WHEN you see the results <G>
  7. It must be wonderful to have a running partner. I can't claim that unfortunately but I do at least have some wonderufl scenery to run in and as soon as my C25K official training is done, I've got 16 gigs worth of jams on the iPod that will have to suffice . I technically have a friend to run with but she's a marathon runner and um, I'm not quite up to speed ( literally ) to run with her HAHA. WTG on W7D1. It's kind of cool to have someone 2 days ahead of me having success. Just makes me more confident of my own coming sucess.
  8. Well here we goi! This will be my accountability log. I figured I'd start it out with a bit of a bio and where I'm at. I'll add my first run today... The name is actually Mike. My parents weren't cruel enough to name me Azatol. I drive a desk for a living. I test computer software used in the financial industry. It's a very "sit on your butt" type job. I'm a 47(Ok next week I will be) year old bachelor who spent 46 years being lazy. In 2014 I started my transformation and have lost 88 pounds. I eat Paleo, lift weights, walk 10 thousand + steps a day and now I run too. I feel better about myself and finally feel comfortable in my own skin. I've completed up to Week 6 Day 1. Today will be W6D2 marking the last time I get a walking break. I'm actually excited about this. I've been walking for years and consider my training with that to be pretty much done <G> So my biig why for running: it's not to lose weight. I've achevied all that before running. It's not to save money on gas. This one is easy. Tried a 30 second sprint on a treadmill and gained instant joy from it. I've been running ever since. In the 2 months I've been running I've yet to say "Ugh, I gotta go run". It's always more like "Just one more hour and I get to run!!" So when you ask me how hard of a battle it has been and I tell you it's been fairly easy, understand it's actually been quite a challenge but it's a labor of love and something you enjoy is always easier to do So without further delays, and in the all mighty words of my ancestoirs.... GRONK RUN!!
  9. Self judgement and doubt during your run are good signs. Think about when you're really really pooped and your tank is empty. Do you form thoughts or just vegitate wishing it would end? If your mind is able to wander and drum up your inner fears, then that tells me you're body is not at its limit. I call this a win!! Your adapting to the training. As your body changes and adapts further, your confidence will grow. You'll no longer get those negative feelings. You'll be too sidetracked thinking about what you'll conquer next. Keep fighting!! I can see the passion in what you type.
  10. Once I decided I love running, i invested a few bucks in some quality gear. Also did it during pre and post xmas sales so many things were half off. I wear russel athletic wicking baselayer from Walmart with a long sleeve running shirt and a Brooks LSD wind shell that's ridiculously thin. On the bottom I just have a pair of loose fit running pants. Synthetic running gloves and a beanie and I'm good to go down into the lower 30's . Coler than that I'll add in a baselayer bottom and some merino wool glove liners and should be good down into the 20s. Below that, I'll most likely wimp out and pay for a month membership at the YMCA with an indoor track, LOL
  11. A challange but hans't pushed me to the edge of my limits as I had predicted it would. I suspect my instant enjoyment of it has made it easier. I really think the leg strength from barbell squats and deadlifts benefitted me as well.
  12. I will run Week 6 Day 2 tomorrow. I've also been a weight lifter since August and a Walker for over a year.
  13. Hi Missy! When i first started lifting I couldn't do lunges. My knees hurt like crazy. I did negative split squats for a month to build up my legs and then once I got some muscle, it took some pressure off the actual knee. Now I lunge and run pain free. I would consider giving it a try. First check out this vid... Now. That's gonna hurt like gangbusters so don't do it that way. Do it without the dumbbells and next to a chair. Put your hand on the chair and support yourself. Also, lower yourself down very slowly. an easy 4 count. Then spring back up and repeat. I'd do 8 reps each leg for 3 sets with a 90 second rest between each set. Do that 2-3 times a week and within a month I suspect your knee problems will suffice. I am not a medical professional so I don't know that your problem isn't truly musculoskeletal vs lack of leg strength. This is just what I did. Please take that advice at your own risk. I'm just a guy who was in cruddy shape and worked through it.
  14. That's the spirit. Happy new year and welcome to the party!!
  15. Oh I didn't hurt myself. My shoulder is blown but it's from bench and overhead push presses but it doesn't prevent me from running. I'm always inured somewhere on the upper body. is the life of a lifter when you lift heavy and aren't in your 20s (by many years). I just pushed myself hard in blowing off steam. My legs feel like gumby after he got run over by a truck. I'll take tomorrow off to heal, run Sunday and still have my 3 workouts this week. I never miss one. I do have a very cold week coming up. Well, the 20s are very cold to me. Gonna see how I fare. Will join the YMCA for a month to use the indoor tracxk if I have to but I will run and it won't be on a treadmill.
  16. Ok this is my own running tip from my own personal limited experience and novice physical fitness knowledge. If you lend any credability to me, you're gambling. <G> I found at the start that I was struggling. I'd look at my fitbit ( its a watch too ) and check the time constantly. OMG OMG OMG just 2 more minutes and I can walk again. My body knew it was about to get a rest and it fought me hard to convince me it was out of gas. It's not!! Your body will sabotage you every single time it can. You're brain is lazy. You must fool it!!! Stop looking at the time. Run until you're told to walk. Your body doesn't know when it's going to rest and can't poop you out in advance. Just a nice comfortable pace and get lost in the music. It really really works for me. I think you should try it and tell me your fidnings. Keep your body guessing.
  17. Folks, I can tell you with some certainty that it can be done. As of Halloween my doctor declared me no longer diabetic. I was on 1000 milligrams of metformin this summer. Nothing right now and my blood sugar rarely tops 100. My A1C was 4.9 last momth. The recipe? 1) PALEO DIET!!!! Eat like our ancesters 2) Exercise. I started lifting weights now I run and lift. I was 315 last year. Walked off a lot of it. 268 when I went Paleo and started working out in August( was walking and eating low carb diet before that but weight loss stopped even with 10k steps a day ). Now I'm diabetes free, off blood pressure meds and 226 pounds. Down 2-3 shirt sizes and 3 pant sizes There is another piece of the puzzle. STRENGTH TRAINING ( which running is a form of ). FACT: Muscle burns calories faster. FACT: your metabolism is elevated for up to 48 hours after you work out. The most important part and the hardest one we have to come to terms with is diet is 80% of the game. Running and strength training alone will get you down a little but diet is where it's at. When you combine the two, bye bye pounds. hello better feeling me. <hops off soap box>
  18. I was a bad boy today. Work was horrid. This is my rough time of year. I went to Plaet Fitness just to walk 30 mins to finish out my 10k steps for the day and blow off some steam. My legs had a completely different plan. So, um, 30 minutes later, having run most of it including some sprinting and my legs arer shot. I could cook an egg on my quads right now HAHA. I guess tomorrow's run and workout are officially moved to Sunday this week <G> Hmmm. Interesting how my life changed in 2014. Back in the day, an asccident men i tore up an entire Little Ceasars pizza. Now an accident is I ran? Heh.
  19. Shannon check this out http://breakingmuscle.com/mobility-recovery/what-is-a-foam-roller-how-do-i-use-it-and-why-does-it-hurt It's the greatest thing ever for sore muscles and really good for youre blood flow. I'm sure hoping you didn't buy that one as it's rather costly. I have a 19 dollar one from my local Walmart. It's 24 inches and just foam. No texture or fancy stuff. I already had it before I started running. Weight lifters use them too. The first time you wake up after a run the previous day and your hamstrings are on fire, you will know the love of a foam roller LOL. I promise you'll be thanking me.
  20. Starting out of the chute with success is the recipe for win!!! My one and only suggestionf ro you is invest in a foam roller. It will become your best friend <G>
  21. That's bizarre. I don't know how it's even possible. I'm positive I'm not selling ED pills, LOL. It happened the exact day I clicked report on those spam posts in general. /boggle. Glad you folks figured out that I'm legit and let me back into the playground. My motivation is to run and run and run, and run <G>
  22. W6D1 down. Piece of cake. Explored a new park to me. They have a mile long shale path as wide as a streeet lane. Was a real pleasure. I feel like after finishing W5D3 the rest of the program will be smooth sailing.
  23. I haven't yet run below 35 degrees F thus don't have any problems but I'm quite cold sensitive and as a walker ( for a long time ), I can tell you a balaclava is your friend. They have some pretty affordable merino wool ones on amazon. Will keep you warm and dry ( no cotton ). That would be my suggesation as the voice of inexperience.
  24. You just explained how I was feeling. 5 weeks of stress. I just did W5D3 this past Monday. Take a slower pace than you usually do, kick the tunes and then be surprised as you finish it with a little gas left over. It sounds ridiculous when you look at the numbers but the science is right. I still can't beleive I did it. Try it, then report and let us know. I bet you nail it!!
  25. Amy, You are in no way too old. I'm 47 and cruising through week 6. All you need to do is want it bad enough. And inspiration? Try looking in the mirror. You had the courage to download the app and give it a try. That sounds like inspiration to me <G> Happy New Year!
