Once I decided I love running, i invested a few bucks in some quality gear. Also did it during pre and post xmas sales so many things were half off. I wear russel athletic wicking baselayer from Walmart with a long sleeve running shirt and a Brooks LSD wind shell that's ridiculously thin. On the bottom I just have a pair of loose fit running pants. Synthetic running gloves and a beanie and I'm good to go down into the lower 30's . Coler than that I'll add in a baselayer bottom and some merino wool glove liners and should be good down into the 20s. Below that, I'll most likely wimp out and pay for a month membership at the YMCA with an indoor track, LOL

A challange but hans't pushed me to the edge of my limits as I had predicted it would. I suspect my instant enjoyment of it has made it easier. I really think the leg strength from barbell squats and deadlifts benefitted me as well.

I will run Week 6 Day 2 tomorrow. I've also been a weight lifter since August and a Walker for over a year.

Hi Missy! When i first started lifting I couldn't do lunges. My knees hurt like crazy. I did negative split squats for a month to build up my legs and then once I got some muscle, it took some pressure off the actual knee. Now I lunge and run pain free. I would consider giving it a try. First check out this vid... Now. That's gonna hurt like gangbusters so don't do it that way. Do it without the dumbbells and next to a chair. Put your hand on the chair and support yourself. Also, lower yourself down very slowly. an easy 4 count. Then spring back up and repeat. I'd do 8 reps each leg for 3 sets with a 90 second rest between each set. Do that 2-3 times a week and within a month I suspect your knee problems will suffice. I am not a medical professional so I don't know that your problem isn't truly musculoskeletal vs lack of leg strength. This is just what I did. Please take that advice at your own risk. I'm just a guy who was in cruddy shape and worked through it.

That's the spirit. Happy new year and welcome to the party!!

Oh I didn't hurt myself. My shoulder is blown but it's from bench and overhead push presses but it doesn't prevent me from running. I'm always inured somewhere on the upper body. is the life of a lifter when you lift heavy and aren't in your 20s (by many years). I just pushed myself hard in blowing off steam. My legs feel like gumby after he got run over by a truck. I'll take tomorrow off to heal, run Sunday and still have my 3 workouts this week. I never miss one. I do have a very cold week coming up. Well, the 20s are very cold to me. Gonna see how I fare. Will join the YMCA for a month to use the indoor tracxk if I have to but I will run and it won't be on a treadmill.

Ok this is my own running tip from my own personal limited experience and novice physical fitness knowledge. If you lend any credability to me, you're gambling. <G> I found at the start that I was struggling. I'd look at my fitbit ( its a watch too ) and check the time constantly. OMG OMG OMG just 2 more minutes and I can walk again. My body knew it was about to get a rest and it fought me hard to convince me it was out of gas. It's not!! Your body will sabotage you every single time it can. You're brain is lazy. You must fool it!!! Stop looking at the time. Run until you're told to walk. Your body doesn't know when it's going to rest and can't poop you out in advance. Just a nice comfortable pace and get lost in the music. It really really works for me. I think you should try it and tell me your fidnings. Keep your body guessing.

I was a bad boy today. Work was horrid. This is my rough time of year. I went to Plaet Fitness just to walk 30 mins to finish out my 10k steps for the day and blow off some steam. My legs had a completely different plan. So, um, 30 minutes later, having run most of it including some sprinting and my legs arer shot. I could cook an egg on my quads right now HAHA. I guess tomorrow's run and workout are officially moved to Sunday this week <G> Hmmm. Interesting how my life changed in 2014. Back in the day, an asccident men i tore up an entire Little Ceasars pizza. Now an accident is I ran? Heh.

Shannon check this out http://breakingmuscle.com/mobility-recovery/what-is-a-foam-roller-how-do-i-use-it-and-why-does-it-hurt It's the greatest thing ever for sore muscles and really good for youre blood flow. I'm sure hoping you didn't buy that one as it's rather costly. I have a 19 dollar one from my local Walmart. It's 24 inches and just foam. No texture or fancy stuff. I already had it before I started running. Weight lifters use them too. The first time you wake up after a run the previous day and your hamstrings are on fire, you will know the love of a foam roller LOL. I promise you'll be thanking me.

Starting out of the chute with success is the recipe for win!!! My one and only suggestionf ro you is invest in a foam roller. It will become your best friend <G>

That's bizarre. I don't know how it's even possible. I'm positive I'm not selling ED pills, LOL. It happened the exact day I clicked report on those spam posts in general. /boggle. Glad you folks figured out that I'm legit and let me back into the playground. My motivation is to run and run and run, and run <G>

W6D1 down. Piece of cake. Explored a new park to me. They have a mile long shale path as wide as a streeet lane. Was a real pleasure. I feel like after finishing W5D3 the rest of the program will be smooth sailing.

I haven't yet run below 35 degrees F thus don't have any problems but I'm quite cold sensitive and as a walker ( for a long time ), I can tell you a balaclava is your friend. They have some pretty affordable merino wool ones on amazon. Will keep you warm and dry ( no cotton ). That would be my suggesation as the voice of inexperience.

Wow. I kinda just disappeared huh? About a week ago I was banned from the forums. I've been writing and begging Zen folks to tell me what I did wrong but alas, most of them were gone for the holiday ( oops ). Today, someone finally got to my issue reviewed my posts and rsponded. Turns out I've not been a bad boy at all. The ban was a mistake. I theorize this happened when I reported a spam post. I think they banned me not the spammer LOL. Glad to be back and cleared of the ban. it was a real morale crusher. Fortunately, my resolve is stronger than ever this week...... Yesterday, I did W5D3 and knocked it out of the park. Took a nice slow comfortable pace and dug in for the long haul. Before I know it, I'm being told to walk. Still had some gas left in the tank. I now have zero doubt whatsoever that I can complete this program and begin working on increasing my pace. 5 weeks of stress over nothing LOL. Piece of cake and a pleasure at that. Now if my knees and ankles can just hold up, I'm golden. They are pretty solid. Lifting helped me there.

Week 4 is in the books. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I felt confident in my ability to complete it so I upped my pace some and pushed a bit. Hoping to help get a stamina jump start for next week.Time to knock it up a notch with W5D1 on Xmas day. I think I'm ready for week 5 but D3 is still haunting me, HAHA.

W4D2 down. Deided to take a stroll down the Ohio River front on the pedestrian path today in the direction I've never been. I made an interesrting dfiscovery. HILLS! THis was quite difficult and really really burned in the calves. Based on weight lifting experience, I think i pushed myself beyond the safe point and think I'll veer away from hills of that magnitude(159 foot rise accoiding to run keeper) until I've completed the program. Fortunately no injury ( fom that ). Naturally an hour later I blew my shoulder out on a lift. I can still run though<G>

I was a bit nervous. 36 degrees F out. My coldest outing yet and a substantial increase from 50/50 ruh/walk to 66/33. I'm surprised how smooth it went. When she said begin your cool down my tank was surprisingly not empty. Yay! Never got cold btw

I have the NoNomPaleo book. Great recipes but usualoly use way more stuff than I have so take an investment. You made magic without a massive grocery list!

Your website looks fantastic. Bookmarked it. Saw your pizza recipe and almost wet myself!! Conveniently, I have a Ninja chopper I bought just to mash up cauliflower. I fry it with onion, garlic and a little salt in bacon grease or ghee at high temps. YUM. Looks like I'll be having my first pizza in over a year come saturday!!!! Thanks so much for the link. I'll be keeping that site close.

Good deal. That I'll check out. I'm not total Paleo. I do some dairy. Activia for breakfast to keep the system functioning properly as well as cottage cheese for a snack. I need the protein. Pro much solid Paleo from there

If you don't see me in the accountabilities folder don't think I'm slipping. I have long log for this purpose already in the Nerdfitness Academy forums. Just not sure I'll keep 2 logs. Am in the habit already there.

My names Mike I'm a middle aged man who come to the reality his health was sliding in a bad way. Decided to make changes in my life and 2014 is where it's at for me. 10k+ steps a day, Paleo diet, 3 days barbell strength training. Lost over 80 pounds, kicked diabetes and high blood pressure...... Fast forward to a month ago. Gym owner told me I should try and run on a treadmill for 30 seconds after my workout just to see if I'd do it. I did. I think I almost died LOL but I loved it. Just kept wanting to do it. Finished Week 3, Day 3 today. I now run Mon, Wed and Fri after work followed by a barbell strength training session ( and then possibly 20 minutes or so of lying in a corner crying HAHA ). I'm still pushin 230lb so running has been a real fight but I'm a fighter and it's fun. W5 D3 looks like it's gonna be a real big fight.. Can't wait to try.
