Wendell Posted November 10, 2015 Report Share Posted November 10, 2015 It's thanksgiving morning, and a 5k. Some friends and co-workers are trying to talk me into running it, and I may. I'm on w3, day 3 tonight or tomorrow. I feel if I maybe increase my workouts, I may be able to run the whole thing by then. I've run the last two days in a row with no ill effects, so I'm thinking of continuing until I feel I need a day off. Thoughts? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jeshi Posted November 11, 2015 Report Share Posted November 11, 2015 Wendell, how much running experience do you have. Have you run before the start of this program? Have you run a 5K before? The biggest question you need to ask yourself (and answer honestly) is if you sign up and cannot run the full distance by that time, are you willing to walk it? Or are you just going to do it anyway? It sounds like a recipe for injury cramming 5 weeks of training into 2 weeks. Listen to your body and take at least 1 rest day each week (ideally 7 days apart). The last thing you want to do is injure yourself and get sidelines for several weeks or months. Is there a 5k you can do with coworkers and friends for Christmas/New Year's? I just finished w4d1, and I honestly think it's getting easier. I used to be really athletic, but basketball was my sport. A lot different than this. Azatol Posted November 11, 2015 Report Share Posted November 11, 2015 As someone who just ran a half marathon when his long run was only up to 8 miles, I've got no business telling you not to do it LOL. Here are the things I considered in running my race..... Am I willing to risk having to walk part of it or stop? Will that ruin the experience of my first half marathon? Am I willing to risk the fact that I'm pushing myself beyond my trained limits and willing to accept the possibility of getting an overuse injury that curtails my running for several weeks? Am I willing to listen to my body and know when to stop if I feel I'm pushing myself to unsafe limits. Willing to accept all the risks? Is the payoff worth the risks? I know for me, without another opportunity to try a half marathon until spring, I felt it was worth the risk. If you are willing to accept those and feel it's worth the risk, DO IT! I want to test myself, and this will be the last 5k until Christmas and I know we'll be out of town for that. I can't wait to see what it's like to run with a thousand or so people around you. Wendell Posted November 14, 2015 Author Report Share Posted November 14, 2015 I'm excited, but also a little nervous. I did w4d2 yesterday, and it was pretty rough for me. I couldn't wait to run, and was tying to coordinate it with "life", and around some nice weather we're getting this weekend. I killed the first day so I thought I could blast right through this one. I made it all, didn't stop, but I struggled. I have all sorts of excuses though. It was cold. The wind was in my face going out. I ate a big ole piece of birthday cake five minutes before lol. My high school basketball coach told me once," Excuses are the foundation of the house of failure". Meh, I just had a subpar run, but will kill the next one. No birthday cake. Day one you're surprised you do it, day 2 is more of a struggle, and day 3 you blow it away. That's how it's been for me anyway. Whatever it is, I love it! Wendell Posted November 16, 2015 Author Report Share Posted November 16, 2015 Got through it. Not nearly as hard as day two. Nice weather, empty stomach, well hydrated, and focused on my breathing more. Pushed my pace for the last five minutes and felt good afterward. Best thing I did was turn my iPhone over in its case once I started so I couldn't look to see how much time was left. I read that on here, and it was the best advice ever! Did it on the treadmill though, and never realized how much I like running outside better. 1:30 left on my last five minute run, and my treadmill shut off!! So I run upstairs, out the front door and down the street. My wife thought I was insane when I came back. My legs felt sooo much better running outside, like I could stretch them out. Wendell Posted November 20, 2015 Author Report Share Posted November 20, 2015 W5d2 done, again on the treadmill. I think I was able to fix the problem by tightening the belt? We'll see if it lasts. I was a little initiated by two 8 minute runs, but I did it fairly, and surprisingly, easily. D3 will be a real test for me, but I'm excited about it.
