Hi all!

I am a 34 year old female from the UK, 5ft5 and around 16 stone. I have always wanted the freedom of running but get so far into it and my knees play me up. But I am adamant I am going to give it a go again even if I have to do it on a cross trainer or treadmill!

I am sure you have had an influx of new members all with similar stories so I will not bore you with a long one. I suffer pains daily in my back hips and knees, not to mention a lifetime struggle with depression. I know exercise is great for all these issues! A few years ago I was a regular gym goer and loved it, I was getting lighter and my moods were stable but my back was killing me. I was put onto tramadol and naproxen by the Doctor but investigations showed no reason for the pain. Since then my weight has increased and my self confidence has plummeted. As a wife and mother of two, I do not do much which is just for me. So THIS is going to be for ME.

If anyone fancies a buddy let me know! :)

Hi Missy!

When i first started lifting I couldn't do lunges. My knees hurt like crazy. I did negative split squats for a month to build up my legs and then once I got some muscle, it took some pressure off the actual knee. Now I lunge and run pain free. I would consider giving it a try. First check out this vid...

Now. That's gonna hurt like gangbusters so don't do it that way. Do it without the dumbbells and next to a chair. Put your hand on the chair and support yourself. Also, lower yourself down very slowly. an easy 4 count. Then spring back up and repeat.  I'd do 8 reps each leg for 3 sets with a 90 second rest between each set. Do that 2-3 times a week and within a month I suspect your knee problems will suffice. I am not a medical professional so I don't know that your problem isn't truly musculoskeletal vs lack of leg strength. This is just what I did. Please take that advice at your own risk. I'm just a guy who was in cruddy shape and worked through it. :)

Hey Azatol

Thanks for the reply :) To be honest your advice seems very sound for my needs. I do need to build up the muscles around that area so will be starting this tomorrow morning (as you described not as the video which you are correct will hurt like hell!)

I completed week 1 day 1 tonight and to be fair my joints seemed ok - Just hope they do not swell over night..... My main problem was actually breathing and pain in my throat!?! Loved the fact no one could see me because it was dark too lol

Where are you at in your progress?

I will run Week 6 Day 2 tomorrow. I've also been a weight lifter since August and a Walker for over a year.

Your on Missy! I fancy a buddy!  I still have yet to download and figure out how to use My Fitness Pal ... yet I will:D

And fyi ... I fancy long and short stories as each and every story, no matter how similar, is experienced uniquely! Bring it all on!

Looking forward to hearing how you do... in regards to depression, your knee, your back, and of course hearing your successes in regards to C25K.  Exercise is a great elixir of life!
