Getting hurt is part of the game

The Back Story

So on July 28th I underwent knee surgery. Before you get scared, it was NOT a running injury(So don't think running = knee surgery). We thought I had a rock imbedded in my knee from a motrocycle accident many years ago that was causing pain post run. Turns out I had a small Glomus toumor(benign, YAY!). This caused me to limp for several weeks. The limping caused a tightness in my right hip flexors, quads and piriformis. When I began running again, the muscle imbalance caused me to contract Patellofemorol Pain Syndrome(AKA Runners Knee) in my non surgery knee.

The Cure:

I spent months in physical therapy working on this. Normally you need to stop running but my PT felt that it important for my mental game to keep me running so he put many restrictions on me. No hills, no running with others, no pacing by a watch. Run easy and by feel. He also knew he needed to keep me training because I was running the Fall Runathon (Pure Tap 5K, Great Pumpkin 10k, Urban Bourbon Half Marathon)

Well, I got through them all but the knee has never completely healed. My knee aches every night after I run and with a big spring race schedule, if I don't heal up, I'm in trouble. With nothing official on my schedule until spring training starts Jan 9th, I figure this is as good a time as any. After this mornings 9 miler (which I may cut to 6 if the knee is bugging me), I will be taking a short hiatus from all knee bending and ground pounding activities until Friday mornings breakfast fun run where I'll re-evaluate it.

I'll still do core workouts, uppser body lifting/strength training, and possibl the elliptical machien if it doesn't bug the knee.

Oh, I am sorry to hear that .... especially seeing how passionate you are about running. I hope your break does you good and has the required effect. elliptical definitely involves bending knees. If you are going for a rest - you might as well take it all the way.. hope you Friday turns out to be a wonderful run leaving knee pain behind you forever...

I've discussed the elliptical with my physical therapist and he's ok with it. It's a less than 90 degree bend and due to the ergonomics there is no load or shock to the knee. It's more comfortable than cycling at the moment and I need to do something to expel energy <G>

Today I ran 9 miles and felt great. The knee doesn't feel bad tonight. I think 5 or 6 days off will do it a good servixe :)

Elliptical actualy caused knee discomfort as did just treadmill walking (after 20 minutes). Spoke to my physical therapist and he told me the recumbant stationary biek then. Will try that tomorrow. Feels good to have a rest(Althought I'm already missing running LOL)

Well since Thanksgiving is this week, your rest couldn't have come at a better time...you might as well be passionate about enjoying it...(family, game, beer, turkey etc  )

Family and friends are all 600+ miles away in New York. My original plan was to spend the holiday running and strength training LOL. Now I'll be catching upon TV

....And my return to running is complete. A nice easy run(The pace was easy but the run itself was a bit of a struggle after not having run in 6 days). Didn't worry about pace and concentrated on good form and high cadence. Managed to hold a 177spm. Knee feels pretty solid but it never bothers me during the run. Tonight I'll know for sure. Hopefully all is good and I can go long tomorrow morning in the rain (UGH). I may take another 4-5 day hiatus next week to more fully heal up.

I also purchased a Grid 2.0 foam roller. 65 bucks is a lot for a foam roller but it is so full of awesome compared to my old 20 dollar one. I have no problems spending good money for quality running gear. I also put the new Garmin Forerunner 235 on Lay-a-way. Should pay it off and pick it up in 2-3 weeks.  That will combine the step counter and HR monitor of my Fitbit Charge with the GPS tools of my Forerunner 220 into one device. Then I'll sell the old watch and the FitBit.

oh my hope knee holds up. nice run you did !so glad not to have to do hills yet we mostly flat here

Funny you should mention that. I didn't run the planned route with the group because there are several rather stepe hills involed. I ran my own route because hills are more stress on the knees and I wanted to ease into it. Will stay away from big hills another couple weeks. Hope to get back to them soon because I love running uphill. It is my specialty and where I pass people in races(especially if they are in the last 3rd of the race).

This morning was chilly and raining.  The people I was supposed to run with didn't show up so i was running alone. Just did an easy 6 miles. Knee feels pretty darn good!!

Going to take it easy for another week to make sure she's truly healed then it's game on!!

Aching is back but way milder than last week. Going to take off as planned until Thursday followed by a long run on Saturday. Will re-evaluate and take another light week as needed. 5 weeks until spring training.

Yah, it gets worse on nights after I run. This has been with me since August. It may take a few weeks to really heal up. That's why I cleared my race calendar. Nothing scheduled until Feb 27th right noiw
