Time vs Distance options

I'm currently on Week 5, Day 2 and I was wondering when it says run 8 mins (or 3/4 mile) does it make a difference which you choose? I chose to do 3/4 mile distance instead of running for 8 minutes. I'm not sure how long it took me to run that 3/4 mile though. I'm going to go back and do it again by time and see if it ends near the same point by distance, but does it matter one way or the other?

hyanddl, I usually ran the time period, instead of distance. For one, I never knew exatly what the distance was that I was running, and didn't want to constantly be looking at my phone. I'm also taller and have long legs, so my running pace was fater than the 10-minute mile that the program suggests, so the one time that I did run specifically to the distance and I still have two minutes left in time, I felt like I shorted myself. So, I guess, my advice is to do what feels right for you, but if you want the best workout you can handle, do whatever is longer. I hope that helps. Good luck!

My first time doing C25K I did the time option. This time I'm using my GPS watch and doing the distance. I think the time option is better for a new runner.

 

For me, on w5 d2 the distance worked out to be about the same as the time. On the 2 mile run of w5 d3, the distance worked out to be 1:59 over the 20 minute time. I'm not sure I would have wanted to run that extra 2 minutes my first time running c25k.

I was curious on distance so I installed RunKeeper and started it when I started my run.  TIP: Go into run keeper options and turn off the voice that keeps calling out the distance. It's confusing when you're waiting for C25K queues. I have since finished the program and purchased a GPS watch so I'm no longer tethered to my phone. Just my iPod. 

 

NOTE: The distance you run is irrelevant. You may not run 5k in 30 minutes on W8D3. I didn't. I did however run for a little over 34 mins and got to my 5k. The points here is that this program teaches you to run for 30 minutes. it's called Couch to 5K but it's really Couch to 30 Minutes Running Endurance. A much less catchy name. The beauty of this all is once you hit that 30 minutes, you'll easily be able to shore up the numbers because you now have endurance and that's all it takes. Run for 30 minutes = Winner winner chicken dinner!!
