Mom of 4 trying to get in shape

Hi there,

I just completed my first day. I was surprised I did it. I am a Mom of 4 kiddos ranging ages from 12 to 6, my second child has been diagnosed as having autism.

I did my first day in my living room, in the dark. I don't feel comfortable running outside. I have about a 10 to 15 foot stretch where I walked/ran laps.

I have never been a runner, but always wanted to be. I am praying I will have the discipline to do this. Also, when do I repeat the days,? I did today and it wasn't bad. I couldn't believe I actually did it!

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I was also self conscious about running outside - the first few meters were embarrassing, but then the embarrassment faded away and the fun set in. Only repeat days if you couldn't complete them. A lot of people repeat and a lot don't feel the need to. It's personal.

Stick with it. It's fun and the added bonus of running outside is NO KIDS for 30 minutes :-)

Welcome to the forums and great job on starting to run.

Please don't feel embarassed to be outside.  I know it can be intimidating at first, but it's very rewarding to run outside.  Different types of terrain can help challenge your body and keep things new.  Being outside where there is a scene can keep you interested.

I know it can be scary - what if people judge you?  I used to think the same thing but I found that when I ran on the recreational pathways in my city, it was the complete opposite.  Every time I go out, other runners seek eye contact to give an encouraging nod, smile or wave.  If I've looked tired, I've had people stop to offer me water.  I've even had people call out to encourage me!

I hope that someday you give it a shot!

Thanks for the encouragement!

I don't run outside not because I don't feel comfortable. It's more a safety issue, the only time I have is in the early morning hours. Because I homeschool my kids and have a child with autism who goes to school, my schedule is very full.

I want to run outside as I want to have the different scenery, but I can't do it at a reasonable time.

Im taking the attitude of trying to work within my situation instead of giving excuses as to why I can't.

Thanks you again you have given me food for thought.
