How to prevent injuries

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

Newbie here! Is it common to have an injury while beginnig to run? Or is it possible to avoid it?

It would be great if people could tell about their experience and give some tips on how to run in a most appropriate way and what is necessary to do to prevent injuries.

Thank you!

The "good" thing about injuries, is they don't lie. They tell you exactly what's wrong if you do some digging. For example, if you get shin splints, it's likely due to overworking, and/or you may want to look into better quality shoes or a different terrain (if it's not due to overworking). Injuries happen unfortunately, but listen to your body! The whole "pain is weakness leaving the body" thing is taken way too literally a lot of times, and people end up getting serious injuries because of it. Any time you think you may have one, do some research, and see a doctor to determine what it is, and you can use that to get to the bottom of why it's happening!

I am crazy nuts about Injury Prevention. I actually purchased the Injury Prevention for Runners program from Strength Running. I love it and poractice it regularly.

Here are some basic things. Always warmup with a dynamic warmuip. Use multiple different pair of running shoes and swap them out to help prevent repeatative motion inuries (each shoe wears differnetly). Run on different surfaces regularly. (Concrete is harder than pavement which is harder than graver which is harder than dirt). Change it up. Finalkly, strength training is one of the keys ot injury free running. I sopend as much time working out as I do running

The Infographic Jeshi posted is good(and accurate) info. I'm especially a bit fan of high cadence running.

Azatol, I freak out about the possibility of getting injured. Did you get the Injury Prevention training plan? Does it really work?

I got Patellofemorol Pain Syndrome(Runners Knee) in both knees right after I finished the C25K program. Wasn't the programs fault. I ran down 100 concrete stairs(running down stairs is the worst thing in the world for your knees) on my first "free" run after compleitng the program. Nearly a month of no running. Got scared and purchased the program because he comes highly reccomended by the owner of the website who helped me on my massive journey to lose weight and become fit (and I have). I trust Jason and have confidence in the program. My only other injury was Runners Knee a second time in august. This was caused by 3 weeks of limping after my knee surgery so again was a unique situation. I have never experienced any other injury. Is it because of the injury prevention program? Just luck? Would I have been injured had I not gotten the program? Who knows. I just know I trust this guy on running 100% and it's served me well so far.
