Diane54
Not sure if I should keep doing this or not. I'm 54 and new to running. This has been challenging but doable, but now in week 3 I am having knee pain. Yesterday with every step (of running) it hurt, so I didn't complete the workout. I have never had knee problems before and I'm not sure I want to invite them at age 54. But I also don't know if maybe it will work itself out. Should I keep running through the pain or is that a sign something is wrong? I am trying to stretch really well before and after. Any advice? Intetra
I would say take it a little easier for a few days. Try to stay active, but do less than you were doing when the pain started. After a few days see if you can increase the intensity of your running again without the pain returning. This is just my personal opinion, I'm not a doctor or a health professional. Diane54
Thanks for your comments. Hard to pinpoint where - just seems like the whole knee. But I am going to give it another try, going back a little bit probably to week 2. Almost embarrassing but you have to start where you are at, right? Ha! Another thing a friend told me last night is that if I am going to run I NEED to get a good pair of running shoes. Told me to expect to pay $100 and it would be worth it, and to use them only for running. I really do want to do this so I might consider that. Again, thanks for the advice, much appreciated. Valeries
Hi, yes I experienced knee pain coming into the third week as well, it was quite painful. I visited the DR and it was on the lower portion of my knee and it was diagnosed as bursitis. I took a load off for a few weeks, iced it, and took aleve twice daily. Then after chatting with a few runner friends, it was concluded that i needed running shoes, I was wearing some Nike shocks, that were about 2.5 years old. Did some research and found some Asics that were about $80, now i'm into week five and I feel like I'm running on clouds. Literally. So, I'd visit a Dr. just to make sure nothing serious happened, but that was my experience.

Diane54
Ooh, thank you for that timely reply. I was leaning toward giving it up. Your experience makes me think it might work after all. I really do like the idea of getting out and running. Thanks!
Loey
Wow. Exactly where I am last day of week three and experiencing some knee pain. Not really painful but discomfort that wasn't there before. I am 58 and very brand new to this. I have always been a walker but never had knee issues. Think I will try the advice of new and better running shoes and see what happens. Diane54
Loey - if you do get better shoes and give it another shot, will you let me know how that goes? I am on the fence. I don't want to spend $100 and then end up still not running because of the knee pain. Good luck to you!
MizRunner
You need the right shoes for sure. Visit a running store and get a fitting. I usually invest in a pair from the running store after getting fit, then purchase my replacements online for less money. Also, consider a joint support supplement if you do not take one. My husband and I like the Move Free Advance. It really helps eliminate/reduce knee pain.
KellyAnn
Shoes are the most important thing. My toes get squished and man does that ever hurt. So I know which shoes are best for me! Keep us posted on you!
sgharbison
Hi--same week same day for me (Wk3D3)! Felt a tinge in the knee during the run and throughout the day it turned into a swollen feeling at the back bend of my knee. Hindered bending at the knee. That night my upper inner thigh felt sore. I iced knee and nsaids and didn't run for 10 days. Front of knee sort of hurts and it occasionally feels like it is going to pop. I started program over at Wk1D1 this morning. At 4 minutes into the warmup I stopped to stretch my hamstring and calves. Not much trouble during run except a bit on the ball of my foot. Lots of slow stretching afterward. Doing nsaids today and Blue-Emu cream. I did a leg of a marathon 4-person relay in March and haven't experienced this before. Am hoping it gets better--hiking to Mt. LeConte (over 6k rise in elevation) next month. Really enjoying the program thru week 3. I wished I had done it years ago!
Axegrinder72
As many have said, I too had knee pain at about week 3. I was 40 at the time and was willing to continue and it worked itself out, but if it worries you or is unbearable see a Dr. I had to quit running for a couple of years but am back at it starting d1w1 tomorrow. Good luck.
