Hi all. Last year I tried to start running. I started off very slow and was able to do 5 laps. Then I had to put running off for a bit. I have decided to do a 5k this year so will start back up trying to run. MY problems with running are this: I can only get to 5 or 6 Lap and then my body shuts down. I also get side stitches and my neck hurts. I have tried to control my breathing and keep my arms at a good position but I still get stitches and the neck pain and I can't get past lap 6. Can someone please help me as I know I am doing something wrong. Also is it bad to eat before you run? I really want to do a 5k so I can prove to myself that I can do this. Anyone have any thoughts? Thank you

Hi there IC, Welcome on here.

So, first of all. You are doing great. Scold, side stitches ?? I hate that. It's from not taking enough oxygen as you run. You run full tilt and ouch , that hurts. Make sure you breathe deep enough as you run. Most of us do not bdeathe deep enough at all. Try doing exercises 3x daily. I set an alarm to make myself breathe deep. Lol

Before I run, if it's early, I eat a high protein snack. String cheese, yogurt, something light. Or because of our weather here , I will run after lunch and I eat a light lunch.

You an do it. So proud of you. Good luck.

Hi TrishE,

I am new as well and finished week 1 without taking a break between days. I had planned on resting tomorrow, but I did the days back to back for two reasons: 1. I felt awesome afterward. I felt happy and pumped all day. So I wanted to do it again. Usually I don't get this feeling after a workout. 2. My work schedule is tough. I'm in the medical field and I take call. Jogging while I'm on call isn't an option. Since I can't change my crazy schedule, how bad is it if I do some days back to back?

Hi there Goodall. So proud of you for being pumped about this. It's an awesome feeling when we achieve somehting. What Trishe saiys about resting is soooooo true. Just Make sure you don't injure yourself. I run/walk every other day. Never back to back days. But some days you feel amazing and want to. Do it, but make sure you rest to to give those muscles enough time to recover. Happy Running.
