Hi all. Last year I tried to start running. I started off very slow and was able to do 5 laps. Then I had to put running off for a bit. I have decided to do a 5k this year so will start back up trying to run. MY problems with running are this: I can only get to 5 or 6 Lap and then my body shuts down. I also get side stitches and my neck hurts. I have tried to control my breathing and keep my arms at a good position but I still get stitches and the neck pain and I can't get past lap 6. Can someone please help me as I know I am doing something wrong. Also is it bad to eat before you run? I really want to do a 5k so I can prove to myself that I can do this. Anyone have any thoughts? Thank you

Hi there IC, Welcome on here.

So, first of all. You are doing great. Scold, side stitches ?? I hate that. It's from not taking enough oxygen as you run. You run full tilt and ouch , that hurts. Make sure you breathe deep enough as you run. Most of us do not bdeathe deep enough at all. Try doing exercises 3x daily. I set an alarm to make myself breathe deep. Lol

Before I run, if it's early, I eat a high protein snack. String cheese, yogurt, something light. Or because of our weather here , I will run after lunch and I eat a light lunch.

You an do it. So proud of you. Good luck.

Kelly is very correct, side stitches are from breathing or lack there of :) I used to always get stitches on my left side right under the upper ribs of my chest. I did a little research on what could help and found out that matching up your breathing to your footfalls (I breath in as my left foot strikes and exhale when it strikes again) as well as breathing from your core will help.

As for eating I eat it no later than an hour before my runs. That gives my belly enough time to digest it while giving me the energy I need. Make sure its good food with protein.

Good luck and I hope you keep us posted on your progress :)

Sassievac,

Yes a rest day is always recommended in between your run days. A lot of people do strength training on these days but you certainly dont have to. You should just give your body a break from running because its definitely a whole body work out and it needs some recovery time. :)

Hi TrishE,

I am new as well and finished week 1 without taking a break between days. I had planned on resting tomorrow, but I did the days back to back for two reasons: 1. I felt awesome afterward. I felt happy and pumped all day. So I wanted to do it again. Usually I don't get this feeling after a workout. 2. My work schedule is tough. I'm in the medical field and I take call. Jogging while I'm on call isn't an option. Since I can't change my crazy schedule, how bad is it if I do some days back to back?

Hello goodall welcome!

Its not necessarily bad to do your workouts back to back as long as you take one or two rest days during the week. From what I experienced, your body will burn out and youll be exhausted, not to mention pulled muscles and a greater possibility for injury. When you exercise youre tearing down old muscle and rebuilding new stronger ones, which being in the medical field Im sure you know haha. Your body needs this recovery time because thats when the muscles rebuild themselves. Not to mention replenishing your energy which is exerted when you exercise.

I understand the difficulty with work schedules but take at least one day off, trust me your body with thank you!

Hi there Goodall. So proud of you for being pumped about this. It's an awesome feeling when we achieve somehting. What Trishe saiys about resting is soooooo true. Just Make sure you don't injure yourself. I run/walk every other day. Never back to back days. But some days you feel amazing and want to. Do it, but make sure you rest to to give those muscles enough time to recover. Happy Running.
