southernlilmama72
I just downloaded this app out of curiosity after hearing about it from a friend. I have just come out of being strapped in a knee high boot for a broken foot for over a month and a half. I was overweight before but after being immobile for that long, I have a new found determination to get into shape and lose the weight I put on during my pregnancies and afterwards. I am looking to a long-term goal of getting down to 150-175 pounds. My short-term goal for now is to get below the dreaded 200 mark which means I have to lose approximately 40-60 pounds by the end of 2014. There is a certain 5k that I am planning on participating in that is scheduled for March 21, 2015. I hope to be close to or at my long-term goal weight by this time. Here's the hurdle that I am facing: I can't run!!! When I have tried to in the past, I have been compared to resembling a duck or a penguin. I would classify myself as an extremely novice beginner who needs to start at the slowest pace possible. My nature is to be a couch potato and very inactive but I'm rounding out the end of my 20s and can see 30 not so far off on the horizon and I want to be healthy so I can live a better life with and for my kids. I'm not getting any younger and I'm tired of living in this overweight, heavy cumbersome body. I would love any feedback from y'all about the best way to go about starting this is; like is it better to start on a Monday at the beginning of the week or does it not matter?? Any advice regarding getting started are greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks in advance!!
GoddessLissa
I'm right with you Southernlilmama72! Horribly out of shape (never really been "in shape" except when I was younger and had a way more amazing metabolism!) just starting C25K. Did Week 1 Day 1 yesterday and my asthma kicked 12 minutes in so I'm going to get up tomorrow and try it again until I achieve that first entire session. It might take me two or three of five tries, but I'll get there! If you need someone to team up with since we're both starting out at the same time feel free to shoot me a message at Melissathegoddess@gmail.com (or add me to your MFP friend list if you're using that app too - my userID is the same as the one here) and we can help each other through this thing together! I like going out early in the morning before people are out and about and I can feel less self conscious about what I look like or how often I need to stop to catch my breath. Have you thought about sneaking out for your session before the rest of the world starts moving? It's such a nice, quiet time and I'm really enjoying it. Guest Victoria
i have always wanted to try running but never kept on any type of training program. I am in my 50's and I am hoping this app will help to keep me motivated! Good luck to all of us! We can do this!
GoddessLissa
Just "completed" Week 1 Day 1 for the second time. Had to walk more than I ran, but I am now setting goals that are even smaller bites of the elephant and am focusing only on getting through the entire Week 1 Day 1 routine. I take the voice prompts as recommendations and do a quick assessment of how I'm feeling (lung & pain wise) and if I have to think too long about it I consider that a sign that I'm just looking for an excuse not to push myself and try to do the run (this means I'm always about 5 seconds behind the actual routine so I don't necessarily stop running as soon as I hear the walk instruction (otherwise that would be cheating myself!) Also, you may have thought to yourself (I know I did) that you can't start C25K because you don't have running shoes or workout clothes or the best headphones (mine suck!) and it's really tempting to tell yourself that you're going to go pick up whatever you need and then start. Deep down inside you probably already know that problem isn't that you need external things to start doing this. (If this were skiing or scuba diving and that would be a different story!) What you and I and so many of us need is the internal "gear" to propel us forward and make us successful in whatever goal it is that we are trying to set for selves in attempting this. Throw on your raggedy gardening shoes and your house painting clothes and your kids Pokémon headphones if you have to but START NOW and reward yourself with those external things when you actually *need* them. Running shoes will eventually be a great thing for me to have, but I'm not doing a whole lot of running just yet so I can hold off until I've actually accomplished a full week (or maybe even two) before going out to buy them. (This doesn't apply to those with orthotic problems who genuinely need special/expensive shoes to get going.) For me it will feel extra awesome to be able to go into a specialty store and treat myself when I can actually call myself a "runner" (or more of one than I am now!) It's not easy, but you can do this! Just remember to take smaller bites of the elephant when you get overwhelmed or discouraged!
KellyAnn
Hey Lil Mama, Congrats on downloading the app. So stinking proud of you. That is the first step I am sure it is daunting as heck to begin. Baby steps, YOU DO NOT have to run at all, walk , walk fast. There are days when I do not run, I walk. If you are off the couch , then you are lapping anyone else sitting there. You can do this. It won't be easy, but if you are determined and set your mind to it, you can do anything you want to do........ I always tell myself, "How bad do you want it? I WANT IT BAD, so I will do anything now to get back in shape.....You can move mountains once the mind is set. You can start the app anyday you choose. 3 Days a week, the other days, do something else, like, lift weights (that gets you lean), walk again, do another day from the app, swim, bike, etc.... My advice is I love to workout 5 days a week, take the weekends off, or do fun activities for exercise....... Anyways, I will add more in a few, gotta run. HUgs to you all!
