GOTR Race in May

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone:

I am a 50 year old father of an 8 year old daughter who is shooting for her second Girls on the Run race this May.  Last year she ran with her mother, but this year, her mother will be with her son at another event, and lucky ME gets to run with her.  I am currently about 270 pounds, roughly 45 pounds over my target weight. I am by no means a couch potato, I am active, outdoorsy, lots of walks hikes chores and the like, just not exercise per se.  I've struggled with several health issues over the past 2-3 years, but over the past 6 months I have been focused and slowly but surely making progress towards losing the weight. Flashback to high school and I was a cross country runner, ran early into college but that was about it.  Many years later and plenty of food without enough exercise, coupled with an ever slowing metabolism and never ending list of things to do besides exercise, and the excuses go on and on and on.  I've been waiting for a reason besides the obvious to really kick it into gear, and now I've got one.  I've got to run a 5K in May!  How am I gonna do that?? Well, it turns out that the GOTR program promotes the Couch to 5K (C25K) program, and it didn't take me long to find the iOS app to go along with that program.  So I am now finished with DAY ONE, holy cow that was an awesome first workout!  I am very excited and pumped about getting back into shape, losing the weight, getting back into running, and running a 5K with my daughter.  I look forward to this program, the app, and making new relationships with folks in similar boats through these forums.  Thank you.

Hi there!  I decided to start the program for a similar reason. I have 2 kids and I want to do what I can to try and be healthy so I be be around to see them for many years to come.

Stick with the program!  Some days you will wake up sore - if you can just keep going you will be glad you did.

The best part is having the app tell you when to run and when to walk. Using knowledge that many others that came before us put together.

Im on Week 6 Day 3 - 22 minute jog tonight. I did a 20 minute run a few days ago. I was so out of breath on Week 1 Day 1 - it's been an amazing transformation. I am happier, more energy, I have less pain and all around feel better.

Keep it up!
