Guest Celeste
When I first started C25K my shins were burning. I pushed through and going into week 4 and my shins are much better however I'm still finding that my legs in general get tired faster than my breathing which used to be the other way around. I'm making sure I'm well hydrated but what are the best stretches to do before running?
KellyAnn
Hi there, Congrats on pushing through. Never ever stretch when your muscles are cold. You definitely need to warm up properly before stretching. A popped muscle is 6 weeks of layups, uuggh, I have been there, done that. You need to Focus on stretching the major muscle groups used in running -- the quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteals and hip flexors -- and incorporate movements that also warm up the abdominal, back and calf muscles. Most experts agree that dynamic stretches (stretches that incorporate movement and take your joints through their full range of motion) are better for pre-run warm-ups than static still stretches that you hold for extended periods of time. Static still stretching is best when you are warmed up. I like the movement in Dynamic Stretching better. I have taught fitness classes for years and the old way was warm-up, stretch, work out, it changed over the years, to where now, we warmup, workout and then stretch. If you can run comfortably without injury then you do not need to stretch before. Now, If I feel something tightening while I am working out , then I do stop and stretch that area. Hope this helps. Guest sarah
I have did a little streching before running but kept wondering if I did enough. Thanks for reassuring me that doing some then stopping in the middle to stretch more is better. I always seem to have issues with my calf muscles
KellyAnn
Me too Sarah, I have popped so many muscles and they are noooo fun, I am not in the mood to be sidelined anymore. Warm up first and then pause the app and stretch. You never want to stretch those calf muscles cold... I like to place my heel off the back of a step to stretch, or in front of you in a leaning position. Happy Running!
