Laney
Hello Everyone! I just found this program, quite by accident while researching beginning running. I am going to be 68 years old next month and just hope it's not to late for me! The reason I've decided to get off my couch and do something worthwhile is twofold. Just one year ago, I lost my beautiful 2 year old grandson Nicholas after he fell into the family pool. After one month in two different trauma units, at two different hospitals, he was called to be an angel. It was the most devastating thing to ever happen to me in my life. This year, his daddy, my son, decided to take up running again, since he ran track in high school and lost it after 10 years, a marriage and two sons later. Because of his running, there is going to be a 5K in May of this year in honor of all children who have drown. My son has asked all of the family (and there's a lot of us!) to participate by either running or walking for Nick. I am so looking forward to it! My second reason is because my husband will be participating in the Spartan Race in Atlanta this coming weekend. I will be attending with him to take pictures. While looking at all of the runners and the motivation they have, I thought....why not me? Am I to old at this point in my life? I'm in excellent health after just having a physical, look pretty good I"m told, for my age, and wonder if this is the right thing to do? sure, I can lose about 30 pounds and maybe since dieting and exercising at the gym is really not my thing, could this work?? I welcome any suggestions, any comments, anything that anyone can tell me as this is one of the scariest things I've ever decided to do! So...after this weekend, taking pictures, maybe next race I can tie on my running shoes....!!! Any input???
Guest TrishE
Welcome Laney, its so nice to have you. I am very sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine the devastation losing a child and grandchild can cause. It sounds like you and your son are taking up running for a great cause. Family is a great motivation for a healthy and active life style. I see no reason why it would be too late for you to start running. Anyone can do it because running is an incredibly unique exercise. Meaning every person has a different way of doing it because every "body" is different. Running isnt something you should be scared of especially since you just got a physical and are in very good health. My advice is invest in a good pair of shoes and to set short term and accessible goals and reward yourself when you reach them. This helps when times start getting tough and motivation dips. Good luck! Please know we are here for help and support if need be
KellyAnn
Wow Laney, First, welcome on here. You are never too old to do this. You can do it. Second, so sorry for your families loss. I can't even imagine what you all went through. All of you running for a cause thta is near to your heart is such an inspiration. We all cannot wait for hear about your progress. You can even motivate me too. I need to lose and get in better shape myself. Life has gotten in the way and we lost a dear friends husband last week at 48 years old, he had a stroke and was gone in 2 days. It sure does make you think about how precious life is. We are in an RV park this weekend in California, I've been watching a lady, probably in her 70's, while we were outside drinking beer, she must have walked this park 5 times, and it has to be 2 miles around. So while we junked out last night and drank more, I woke up this am thinking, uh, no more, it's time to move it. I can't wallow in my friends death anymore and hurt. Let's do this!!! I gotta lose too. Today is a fun family day on the lake, no beer for me at all, lots of water, and tomorrow I will run with my app. That's for making me move too. Post your progress. So proud of you.
