Sprinter

So I was a sprinter in highschool. I played football and ran the 100 and 200m but now I'm joining the Navy and they focus more on long distance running. I've been running into the problem where I start off way too fast and my body just isn't used to running more than 800m like at all. Any tips on how to adjust to this?

Also the test I have to train for is a 1.5 mile run in less than 12:30 but I'd like to get it to below 10:00 if possible. So I have to run about a 6:30ish mile pace. Should I start at that pace and run that pace as long as possible or should I start with a slower time but longer distance?
