If you run with your phone physically on your body (not like in a cup holder on a treadmill), there are free apps that can tell you approximately what you're doing step and calorie-wise. Obviously they're not perfect but they're probably only off by a few steps.
I use Pacer, but if you have an iPhone the Health app (part of apples standard predownloaded apps) also tracks steps/mileage and calorie burn but it's the most basic of programs and not great for long term tracking.
