Days off?

Recommended Posts

Guest TrishE

It really depends on what your comfortable with and your schedule. The program is three run workouts a week. You can do them everyday or every other day. Be sure to take a rest day though its important to let your muscles rest :)

Is there a specific guideline for when to take a rest day? If I'm feeling fine can I still do the workouts every day? I am a BRAND new runner and I am very overweight. The runs have been very challenging but surprisingly my body feels good. As long as I'm not in any pain is it ok to keep going on a daily basis? Thank you!

Hi Jackie,

I rest when my body says to rest.  I like to run every other day, soem run everyday.

I believe our bodies get to used to doing the same thing and we get into a slump, shake it up and change it up!   Ha, I like that one!!!!

Good Luck!

Even if you're feeling fine i suggest you do mon, wed fri. Then rest on the weekends because even if your lungs and heart can take it, running for the first time is tough on your bones and you can get shin splits and things like that. When you run your body tears your bones and shin down and rebuilds them with fresh stronger ones, so every time you give it a day or 2 of rest you give your body time to rebuild the bones and you come back with stronger ones risking a lot less injury. Trust me I learned this the very hard way. I am young and in decent shape. Never thought it would happen to me and it did, and it's an on going thing.

I usually just walk a couple of miles on the days off because I still love to get out there. And do some light strengthening exercises such as 4-5 push ups, some squats and lunges, etc.

From what I have read it's good to rest in between days to let your muscle fibres rebuild itself. This helps you to become stronger. What I plan to do is alternate days with running and then strength training and yoga to help stretch my muscles and also strengthen my legs. Today I have been feeling tetchy as I had a run yesterday and actually wanted to do more today. I don't want to over do it as I don't want to 'run' before I can walk, especially because I want to enjoy it and not burn myself out too quickly. Hope I make sense.
